Milieu: Creating Spaces with Soul with Glenn Ban

Milieu: Creating Spaces with Soul with Glenn Ban

Milieu  is a series that explores the unique ways in which we breathe life into our homes. From coastal towns to city living, our homes are a celebration of small, simple moments. They’re a reflection of our lives. Our stories. Our milieu.

Our next feature brings us to the East Coast of New York to visit  Glenn Ban  . Glenn works as an interior designer, specializing in both residential and commercial spaces. Known for creating casually elegant homes that feel livable and inviting, a glimpse into his own  milieu  speaks volumes of this effective aesthetic.

A seamless duet of modern and vintage art line the walls, while warm wooden statement pieces and antique treasures are beautifully highlighted by the natural light flooding into each room. We hope you feel as taken as we do with Glenn’s soulfully curated East Coast abode.

Please, introduce yourself!

My name is Glenn Ban, I ’m an interior designer, I reside in East Hampton, NY with my partner and my son Charlie who is 17.

What sparked your love of interiors?

Looking back to my childhood I always enjoyed interiors, moving furniture around in my house. I was always an artistic child and eventually, I decided to pursue the study of photography.

I guess I’ve always looked at things through the lens of a camera, especially the interiors I create.

Have you always lived on the East Coast?

Yes, I grew up on the East Coast, in a suburban town in New Jersey in a traditional arts & crafts style house.

What is one of your favourite things about living on the coast during a month like February where we’re caught somewhere between seasons?

I’ve always been drawn to the changing of the seasons, although as I get older I don’t enjoy the cold as much. Living in a place where the population increases during the summer makes you appreciate the quieter months.

If you could work on an interior design project anywhere in the world, where would that be and why?

Honestly, I love what I do that I’m open to exploring projects anywhere, it mirrors my answer on places I would travel too…if it’s the right project the location doesn’t matter as much.

How would you describe your personal aesthetic and style when it comes to interiors?

I would say that my personal aesthetic & style within interiors is always rooted in natural materials, most of my spaces personal and for clients involve vintage and antique pieces. A space that doesn’t lack soul; objects, books, art, add layers of interest.

What does ‘minimalist living’ mean to you?

I don’t think of myself as a minimalist, but I think I’m a good editor.

What are some of your most cherished qualities in a home/space?

Art, books, and the company of loved ones.

Which item in your home (old, new, antique, contemporary) has the most unique story?

I have a wood root that I found on my travels in Thailand that is very special to me.

Any advice for incorporating antique items or furnishings into a modern space?

My advice would be to add things with some age or patina; a rustic bowl on a modern table completely changes things…linen napkins that have been washed on a modern table, creates tension between old and new.

Do you have a favourite room, spot, or viewpoint in your home?

I love my living room, mostly because I enjoy looking at all the things I’ve acquired over the years, and connecting the stories of how they came to be.

Who or what are some of your biggest design inspirations?

Ilse Crawford, Thad Hayes, Axel V ervoordt, Paul Fortune.
