On Spending Ordinary Moments En Plein Air

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.”

Henry David Thoreau

As you likely know by now, we're rather sentimental about the seasons; each one with something uniquely rewarding to offer. Something else we're passionate about is turning ordinary, everyday moments into something worth savouring. One of our favourite ways to do this throughout the spring and summer months is to transition daily chores that would usually be tackled indoors, outdoors.

So, in the spirit of the season, here are a few ways we like to practice what we preach:

Gentle Cycle, Sun to Dry

An oldie but a goodie. People have been drying their laundry outside for thousands of years, and with good reason! Beyond it being environmentally friendly (which is always a win in our books), it leaves your laundry smelling wonderfully fresh, it improves the longevity of the garments, there are fewer wrinkles... shall we go on?

Beyond hang drying your clothing, we also like taking the simple task of folding and sorting outside. Because why not? The sun is shining.

Ready to Serve

Whether it's a special occasion or a simple Wednesday dinner at home, setting the table to dine outside is always a good idea. It's a wonderful reset for your nervous system as it activates your body's ability to 'rest and digest', while providing a welcome reprieve for your mind after a long day in a modern world of screens and sensory overload.

Next time you're meeting friends for dinner, book a table on the patio at your favourite restaurant, eat your midday lunch on the porch, drink your morning smoothie in the sun... whatever the scenario, your mind and body will thank you.

Space to Breathe

For those who don't have an outdoor garden to tend to, bringing your indoor plants outside for a little fresh air and sunlight is a gift for both yourself and your plants.

The combination of direct sunlight, a natural breeze, and a temporary change of environment can stimulate an increase in growth. Plus, it's fun! A little field trip with your leafy friends.

Worth it for the View

Take your laptop outside to the patio or to a nearby park to tackle your morning inbox. The work needs to get done regardless, so why not take it on in the fresh air? In fact, a breath of fresh air may be exactly what you need to inspire a few of those replies...

Walk and Talk

Turn daily work calls into walking meetings; take a call in your garden, or stroll around the block while brainstorming with your colleagues. Naturally, this applies to your out-of-office hours too! Catching up with a friend on the phone while walking the dog or drifting through your neighbourhood can help you ground into your surroundings and connect.

Good Morning, Sunshine

Instead of scrolling through Instagram with your morning coffee, might we suggest moving outside for a few shoulder rolls on the balcony? Spending 10-15 minutes outside first thing in the morning has numerous benefits for your overall health.

The exposure to sunlight provides you with a boost of vitamin D that helps boost and balance your mood, energy levels, and even your ability to sleep at night. Unconvinced? Worth a try!

That's All She Wrote

Replace habitual scrolling with a book, a refreshing beverage, and a comfy spot outside. Whether you're an avid reader or are looking to improve on your yearly book count, bringing your latest read outside could be just the motivation you need.

As simple as it seems, a subtle change in environment can go a long way for your body and mind! What are a few tasks that you'll be enjoying en plein air throughout the spring and summer months?
