by the water: an ode to the shore

by the water: an ode to the shore

"If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in the water." - Loren Eiseley

Why are we so drawn to water?

It is a well known fact that over 60% of our bodies consist of water. Is it a subconscious kinship that provides the impulse to dip our toes in the lake on a hot day? A comforting familiarity that provides instant relief when the temperature is climbing and the heat feels inescapable.

Perhaps it is our evolutionary history; humans have been building settlements along riverbanks for thousands of years. Our livelihoods depend on it.

Or maybe it is purely scientific; some scientists claim that seeing and hearing water cause the brain to release a number of specific neurochemicals that increase blood flow to our brains and hearts which inspire a physical feeling of relaxation and calm.

What feels certain is that there is an inherent reverence that comes with being by the water. A feeling that can stop you in your tracks and help the worries of the day melt away into the sandy beach or pebbled shoreline.

It is intriguing; mysterious as it is deep.

It is serene; smooth as polished glass on the right day with the right light.

It is charming; an acrobatic performer with its high tides and topsy turvy waves.

Whether it’s a sandy beach, a windy pier, or a splash pad down the street from your home, spending a day or even a few hours near the water can feel incredibly restorative. We hope that you have the chance to seek out this unquestionable reprieve, even if only for a few moments.
