Home is the nicest word there is.
– Laura Ingalls Wilder
We’re feeling a bit of the “wanting what you can’t have” right now, with the world in crisis and all of us dutifully staying home and maintaining social distancing – it may be the first time ever that we feel begrudging about staying home.
Talking about wanting to slow down and embrace the now is all fine and good until you’re confronted with the reality of really, truly being home. With no other option before you.
It’s a whole lot harder to do than to think about living in the moment and enjoying quieter, smaller lives. But here we are!
In this time of forced slowness with time to reflect, we’re finding that it requires a conscious and sustained effort to see and embrace where we are right now. And that’s a good thing.
The practice of quiet, stillness, and enjoying what we have doesn’t come easy but it’s one that’s worth pursuing, and we have an opportunity in this moment to collectively embrace our homes, our lives, and our loved ones.
We wanted to share what we’re doing as a family to embrace our home and fall in love with it all over again while also giving ourselves the space we need to acknowledge imperfections.
We hope these ideas and thoughts are helpful for you and yours during this time of isolation and that they help you find a different perspective in your own home as well.
Reading as a family.
We’ve always said we would make reading together as a family part of our routine, but only in recent weeks have we finally been able to make this happen. Our favourite way to read together? Brew a pot of tea, snuggle up with plenty of blankets and take turns reading to our children.
Trying a new recipe.
We have a few of those decorative and fancy cookbooks that don’t really see much use during our usual routines. Lately we’ve been trying a few of the more intimidating recipes since we have more time to spend preparing meals. Plus, many hands make light work, and we’re enjoying cooking and spending time in the kitchen together.
Tackling home projects.
More specifically our linen closet. It was in much need of some organization and we’re excited to share with you how we’ve upgraded and rearranged to make it more functional and beautiful very soon!
Deep cleaning our space.
This one is probably popular since we’re all spending more time and starting to notice hand prints on wall and dusty baseboards. We’ve been going through our checklists of home chores and getting our spring cleaning all finished up as warm weather is just around the bend. If you need extra tips for a good deep clean, check out our journal entry on spring cleaning here.
Playing boardgames and starting puzzles.
Did we have a spare second for something as frivolous as puzzles and games before a worldwide stay home campaign? Absolutely not. But playing together as a family has always been a goal of ours and now we have time to do it. What a wonderful thing to embrace: free time.
From our hearts to yours, we hope you’re finding space to release from worries and anxieties during this difficult time. We encourage you to embrace the moment and find joy and love for your home, once again.
