Origins of the Classic Peg Rail

Origins of the Classic Peg Rail

"Don't use a lot where a little will do."

We believe that our homes and the spaces where we live are meant to reflect our values and ideals. But sometimes this is easier said than done.

In most of our homes, while our ideal is a beautiful mixture of form and function, in reality there are funny corners and nooks in our houses, or a constantly messy countertop where all the tidying in the world just doesn’t seem to stick.

That’s why we love the concept behind the humble peg rail. The peg rail has it’s origins from the Shaker religious community founded in 18th century England. This group had guiding principles of simplicity, utility, and honesty. These beliefs were reflected in the way they furnished and designed their homes – with the peg rail as the key method of organization in almost every room in the house.

Peg rails were used in school classrooms to hang chairs. In kitchens to store pots, pans, and utensils. In hallways to hang hats and coats. In living areas to hang dried flowers and other decor.

They were an all-purpose storage and decor tool, but most of all they provided a simplistic and ingenious solution to combining a necessity with something that still gave beauty to a space.

Our love of the peg rail comes from a similar passion for well designed rooms that provide beauty but also make sense for the reality of every day living – one where having a broom or a dish towel close at hand is an absolute necessity.

Like the Shakers, we use peg rails for just about everything! We stock peg rails and all sorts of tools to hang on them because we believe in the ideal they represent: that form and function can work together, and a tidy space can feel comfortable and cozy.

We love the history behind this simple piece of furniture and the way it looks hung in our home, holding objects of practicality but also of beauty, like dried herbs or flowers.

Peg rails are the perfect daily reminder that our homes are meant to be spaces of warmth, comfort, and utility – and that these ideals can work hand in hand.

Below you can see some of our favourite ways to use our peg rail at home, and we hope this inspires you to try a new way of creating a minimal, but practical living space in your home.
